After losing my husband and daughter, I never expected to become a mother again. Then a dying father asked me to marry him. One year after his death, his daughter gave me a box that changed everything.
Years ago, I lost my husband and my little daughter, Josie, in a car accident. Afterward, one thing haunted me: Josie’s favorite stuffed rabbit, Mr. Bunny, had disappeared.
I eventually started working as a hospital housekeeper, where I met Daniel, a terminally ill father raising his six-year-old daughter, Lily.
Lily reminded me of Josie.
I began helping her—braiding her hair, bringing her food, and sitting beside her while Daniel received treatment.
Daniel and I grew close. Knowing he was dying, he eventually asked me to marry him so I could care for Lily after he was gone.
I said yes.
We married in his hospital room.
Two weeks later, Daniel died.
For the next year, Lily and I built a life together. She became like my own daughter.
Then, on the anniversary of Daniel’s death, Lily walked into the kitchen carrying a small box.
“Dad told me to give this to you today,” she said. “He said you still don’t know why he chose you.”
I opened the box.
Inside was Mr. Bunny.
I recognized him immediately—the worn fur, the crooked stitch on his ear, even Josie’s initials.
I broke down.
Then I found Daniel’s letter.
He revealed that he had been at the accident scene. Josie was still alive when he arrived. Before she died, she gave him Mr. Bunny and whispered:
“Make sure he gets home to my mommy.”
Daniel had kept that promise for years.
But then Lily revealed something that shocked me even more.
“Dad didn’t choose you,” she whispered.
“I did.”
She told me she had asked Daniel if I could be her mommy because I was the person who always stayed.
For the first time, I realized I hadn’t been chosen because I was broken.
Lily had chosen me because I loved her.
And after all those years, Josie’s little rabbit had finally found its way home.
