I Was Unconscious for 3 Days. Then I Heard My Husband Say, “She Doesn’t Know.”
I was unconscious in the ICU for three days after severe diabetic ketoacidosis.
But I could hear everything.
The nurses. My mother. Even my husband, Daniel, talking beside my bed.
Most of what he said was normal and comforting.
Then, on the second night, his phone rang.
He answered without leaving the room.
“No, she’s still out.”
I couldn’t move or open my eyes.
Then his voice became quieter.
“She doesn’t know about that.”
A few seconds later, he whispered:
“And if she wakes up, she never needs to.”
The next afternoon, I opened my eyes.
Daniel smiled, grabbed my hand, and acted relieved.
I stared at him and asked:
“Who were you talking to last night?”
His face changed instantly.
He said it was someone from work.
It wasn’t.
Days later, I discovered a key hidden in his desk.
It belonged to an apartment he’d rented weeks before I got sick.
And suddenly, I realized the secret wasn’t another woman.
It was something much harder to accept.
