My Bride Walked Down the Aisle Wearing My Late Father’s Suit
When Claire appeared at the end of the aisle, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.
She wasn’t wearing the white wedding dress I had imagined for months.
Instead, my 31-year-old bride was wearing an enormous, old-fashioned black men’s suit. The jacket swallowed her shoulders, the sleeves covered her hands, and the trousers bunched around her ankles.
Our guests whispered as she walked toward me.
I was confused and embarrassed until Claire reached the altar and turned back one of the oversized cuffs.
Hidden inside was an old fabric label.
I read the first line.
“Richard’s Wedding Suit.”
Richard was my father. He had died suddenly four years earlier, and I had always been heartbroken that he would never see me get married.
Then I noticed another word sewn beneath the label:
“Danny.”
My childhood nickname.
I immediately broke down.
Claire explained that she had contacted my mother months earlier. She wanted to include something belonging to my father in our wedding, but when my mother gave her his old suit, Claire couldn’t bring herself to cut it apart.
So she decided to wear the entire thing.
“I wanted one part of him to walk down the aisle with us,” she whispered.
Later, Claire changed into her wedding dress, but the photo I treasured most wasn’t the traditional wedding portrait.
It was the picture of her standing beside me beneath the trees, still wearing my father’s enormous suit, both of us laughing through tears.
For the first time, I felt like my father had somehow been there.
And I realized Claire hadn’t just chosen a wedding outfit.
She had found a way to bring a piece of my father back for one unforgettable day.
