My mother-in-law invited me to her family reunion and asked me to bring her favorite chocolate cake. I thought she was finally accepting me.
Instead, when I arrived, every seat was taken—including the one beside my husband, Callum, where his ex-wife, Felicity, was sitting.
“Just leave the cake in the kitchen,” Odette told me. “This gathering is really for family.”
I couldn’t believe my own mother-in-law was treating me like a stranger.
When I confronted Callum, he admitted he’d been secretly giving Felicity money for six months. But neither of them had told me the truth.
Then Felicity stood up and revealed something shocking.
“Odette told me Callum was unhappy in his marriage. She thought we should get back together.”
I turned to my husband. “You’re married to ME. Why did you let this happen?”
Callum finally admitted he’d allowed his mother to interfere in our marriage—and had discussed our problems with his ex-wife behind my back.
But the biggest revelation came when Felicity explained why her own marriage to Callum had ended.
Every time she needed him to stand up for her, he’d chosen his mother instead.
Suddenly, I understood that this wasn’t really about Felicity. It was about a husband who had never learned to protect his marriage from his mother’s control.
I took my cake and left.
For the first time, I stopped trying to earn Odette’s approval. Now Callum would have to prove that his promises meant something.
