My Husband Pretended to Go to Work for a Week—When I Followed Him, I Discovered a Secret That Changed Everything
My husband, Eliam, forgot his medication beside the coffee maker, so I decided to surprise him by dropping it off at his office.
But the receptionist looked confused.
“Ma’am, your husband has been on leave for an entire week.”
My heart sank.
For five days, Eliam had kissed me goodbye, carried his laptop, and pretended to go to work. Every evening, he returned with stories about exhausting meetings and stressful deadlines.
When I texted him about his medication, he replied, “Work is absolutely crazy today.”
He was lying.
The next morning, I followed his car. Instead of turning toward his office, he drove across town to an unfamiliar building.
Minutes later, he emerged beside an elderly man I immediately recognized: Frank, our former neighbor, whose wife had died two years earlier.
They sat together with a laptop and a stack of cards. Then I noticed the sign outside the building:
ADULT LEARNING CENTER.
Suddenly, my suspicions about an affair disappeared, but one question remained: Why was my husband secretly spending his days there?
That evening, I confronted Eliam. He finally admitted he had taken vacation days to help Frank, who struggled with reading and had decided to learn after realizing he couldn’t read a birthday card from his grandson.
Eliam had promised to keep Frank’s situation private, but instead of explaining that he couldn’t share the details, he’d lied to me for an entire week.
The next day, Frank invited me to the learning center. He opened his grandson’s dinosaur-covered birthday card and slowly read the words himself.
When he reached the final sentence—“You’re my best buddy”—his voice trembled.
I finally understood why my husband had been so determined to help him.
But I also realized that even a good secret can damage a marriage when it’s protected with lies.
