A 6-Year-Old Called 911 Because He Thought His Mother Was Lost on Her Way Back From Heaven
When little Sam’s father told him that his mother had “flown to heaven,” the six-year-old believed she was simply on a trip and would eventually return home. But after waiting for days with no sign of her, he called 911 for help.
Dispatcher John Lewis answered and listened as the heartbroken boy explained that he was afraid his mother had gotten lost on her way home. Touched by Sam’s innocence, John suggested that he write letters to his mother and send them toward heaven with red balloons.
When Sam called again, the dispatcher went a step further. He organized fellow officers to visit the boy, each carrying a red balloon to encourage him and remind him he wasn’t alone.
Soon, Sam received letters telling him how much his mother loved him. But there was a heartbreaking truth behind them: his father had been writing the letters himself, hoping to comfort his son until he was old enough to understand his mother’s death.
Sometimes, the greatest act of kindness isn’t finding a way to bring someone back—it’s helping a grieving child feel loved while learning to live without them.
