Eric Dane Noticed One Small Change Before His ALS Diagnosis — A Moment With Chopsticks Changed Everything

Posted on October 26, 2026 By admin

Eric Dane, the beloved actor known to millions as Dr. Mark Sloan, “McSteamy,” on Grey’s Anatomy, faced one of the toughest battles of his life after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

In April 2025, Dane publicly revealed his diagnosis, sharing his gratitude for the love and support of his family during an uncertain time. Sadly, he passed away in February 2026 at the age of 53.

But before he knew what was happening, he noticed something unusual during an ordinary family moment.

In January 2024, while eating sushi with his daughters, Dane struggled to use chopsticks with his right hand. His fingers also felt numb. At first, he thought it might be a pinched nerve or simply the result of overusing his hand while texting.

Then, about three weeks later, it happened again — only this time, it was worse. He could barely grip the chopsticks.

What seemed like a small, insignificant problem became the beginning of a long search for answers.

Eventually, Dane received his ALS diagnosis from neurologist Dr. Mark Terrelonge at the University of California, San Francisco. He later described the moment as emotionally devastating.

After the appointment, he called his former wife, Rebecca Gayheart-Dane. She reassured him that she would stand by his side as he faced the difficult road ahead.

Throughout his career, Dane brought unforgettable characters to life in Grey’s Anatomy, The Last Ship, and Euphoria. But beyond his success on screen, he was also a devoted father to his two daughters, Billie and Georgia.

Even as his condition progressed, Dane continued working whenever his health allowed. He also used his platform to raise awareness about ALS and advocate for more research into the disease.

During a virtual panel for the nonprofit I AM ALS in December 2025, he explained why sharing his experience mattered to him: he hoped his story would help others better understand the disease and encourage greater attention to research.

His posthumous memoir, My Book of Days, offered a more personal look at his life and his experience with ALS.

Eric Dane’s story is a powerful reminder that serious illnesses can sometimes begin with changes that seem small or easy to dismiss. His legacy extends far beyond the characters he played — through his family, his courage, and his efforts to bring greater awareness to a devastating disease.
