For months, my 25-year-old daughter Nina kept making excuses to avoid visiting. I worried she was sick, struggling, or hiding something. But when I finally ran into her at a grocery store, she revealed a truth that left me speechless.
She told me it was because of Richard, my husband.
During one visit, while I was out running errands, Richard had found Nina’s old diary and read her private thoughts aloud, laughing and mocking her. Worse, he had made cruel comments about the miscarriage she had suffered.
Nina felt humiliated and unsafe. She wanted to tell me, but feared I would choose my husband over her. So she slowly stopped coming home, believing she had lost her place in my life.
I was devastated. I had trusted Richard without realizing how deeply he had hurt my daughter.
That night, I packed my things and left. By sunrise, I had filed for divorce. I ended the marriage, asked Richard to leave, and eventually sold the house to start over.
Two weeks later, I visited Nina with her favorite key lime pie and apologized. I told her I should have protected her, and that I would never choose him over her again.
She admitted she had thought I knew what happened and had allowed it. But as we talked, the distance between us finally began to disappear.
Soon, we were baking cookies, sharing tea, and making plans for weekly Sunday dinners and Wednesday takeout. Nina and her partner Max were also beginning to heal after their loss.
I finally understood that I had stayed in the wrong marriage because I was afraid of being alone. But choosing peace meant choosing my daughter—and myself.
