Trump’s Approval Ratings Remain Low in Early May
As the first week of May ends, President Donald Trump continues to face low approval ratings. Recent polls tied to his second-term performance show little improvement.
Polls marking Trump’s first 100 days of his new term on April 29 revealed growing disapproval, with approval numbers reaching historic lows—comparable only to Trump’s own ratings in 2017. Despite political shake-ups, tariff disputes, and controversial remarks, his ratings have stayed mostly flat.
According to RealClearPolitics, Trump’s average approval was 45.2% in early May, with disapproval at 51.1% per a new AP-NORC poll. The New York Times’ aggregation shows similar figures: 44% approve, 51% disapprove.
Recent Poll Highlights:
-
AP-NORC (May 1–5): 41% approve, 57% disapprove; 60% disapprove of Trump’s higher education policies.
-
Economist/YouGov (May 2–5): 42% approve, 52% disapprove; 40% say U.S. is in a recession.
-
Morning Consult (May 2–4): 46% approve, 52% disapprove; record-low approval for trade policies.
Despite some slight fluctuations, Trump’s approval remains underwater as his second term progresses.
