A California teacher was removed from her position after mocking the U.S. flag and promoting a personal social agenda. Kristin Pitzen, of the Newport Mesa School District, posted a TikTok video joking about removing the American flag from her classroom because it made her “uncomfortable,” and encouraged students to pledge allegiance to the pride flag instead.
Pitzen, laughing throughout the video, said she let students choose whether to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and directed them toward the pride flag in place of the U.S. flag. In another clip, she declared, “I pledge allegiance to the queers,” while showcasing her pride-themed classroom decor.
The videos sparked outrage among parents and the public, with many accusing her of disrespecting the American flag and inappropriately influencing students. In protest, parents planted flags outside the school. Critics online emphasized the flag’s symbolism of freedom and sacrifice.
The viral controversy, which began in 2021, led to Pitzen deleting her social media and being removed from the classroom. The case highlights ongoing debates over patriotism, free expression, and educators’ influence in schools.
