I love animals, and it’s heartbreaking to see one chained in the back of a pickup truck — especially a full-grown mountain lion.
That was the reality for Mufasa, a mountain lion forced to live this way as part of a traveling circus in Peru. His life was filled with suffering, all for human entertainment and profit.
Thankfully, in 2015, Animal Defenders International rescued him after months of effort. They found Mufasa while working to shut down the circus. After 20 years of captivity, he finally experienced freedom in the Amazon.
Though his health declined due to years of abuse, Mufasa spent his final months in peace. He passed away the same year, but his story highlights the ongoing abuse many animals still endure in circuses and shows.
Mufasa’s brief taste of freedom was bittersweet — but better than never knowing it at all.
