The brother of Christine Chubbuck, the news anchor who tragically killed herself on live TV in 1974, has spoken out, reflecting on her “public suicide” that still haunts him. On July 15, 1974, during her show Suncoast Digest on Sarasota’s Channel 40, Chubbuck calmly delivered news before announcing, “You are going to see another first – an attempted suicide,” and fatally shot herself on air. She died 15 hours later.
Chubbuck’s brother, Greg, shared that she had struggled with depression since childhood and may have been bipolar, though it went undiagnosed at the time. Her suicide, which shocked the nation, inspired films like Network (1976) and two 2016 movies, Christine and Kate Plays Christine. Greg, however, regrets the focus on her death rather than her life, emphasizing, “There’s nothing glorious about suicide, or what it does to the people who loved the person.”
