21-Year-Old Congressional Intern Killed in D.C. Shooting
Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a 21-year-old intern for Rep. Ron Estes and rising senior at UMass Amherst, was fatally shot in Washington D.C. on July 1 near the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Police believe he was an unintended victim, caught in crossfire around 10:30 p.m. A 16-year-old and an adult woman were also injured but survived.
Eric, originally from Granby, Massachusetts, was studying finance and political science, and had aspirations in public service. His death has deeply affected both Capitol Hill and his hometown.
Rep. Estes praised Eric’s kindness and dedication, while Rep. Richard Neal, who teaches at UMass, called the shooting “heartbreaking,” saying Eric embodied civic commitment and growth.
The Metropolitan Police are investigating and offering a $25,000 reward for information. No arrests have been made.
