Bullying is one of society’s most despicable behaviors, and social media has amplified it, allowing people to hide behind anonymity while being cruel.
Melissa Blake, a writer with Freeman Sheldon syndrome, experienced this firsthand after a 2019 CNN article. A YouTuber shared her photo, leading to widespread attacks on her appearance. She was called names like “blob fish” and “whale.” Instead of succumbing to the trolls, Melissa decided to fight back.
She tweeted, “During the last round of trollgate, people said I should be banned from posting photos because I’m too ugly. So I’d like to commemorate this with these 3 selfies…” The tweet gained attention, and Melissa posted a selfie every day for a year, growing her Instagram following from 7,500 to 100,000. She also used her platform to discuss disabilities.
Each selfie, Melissa explained, was a celebration of her personality and a way to challenge misconceptions about disability. She took back her power and showed that people with disabilities lead full lives. Her courage inspired thousands of supporters online.
