Tavia Hunt, wife of Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, has confirmed the tragic death of their 9-year-old cousin, Janie Hunt, in the devastating Texas floods, which have claimed at least 82 lives, including 28 children.
In an emotional Instagram post, Tavia shared that Janie died at Camp Mystic, a historic girls’ camp on the Guadalupe River in Wimberley. The camp was overwhelmed when the river surged 30 feet above normal, trapping many in low-lying cabins. Over 750 campers were on site; several remain missing.
“Our hearts are broken by the devastation and the loss of so many lives — including a precious little Hunt cousin,” Tavia wrote, expressing her struggle with faith amid the tragedy.
Janie, described as full of life and sweetness, was the great-granddaughter of oil tycoon William Herbert Hunt and niece of Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt.
The camp’s beloved director, Richard “Dick” Eastland, 70, also died trying to save campers.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a day of prayer and pledged a full investigation. Over 850 people have been rescued, though concerns are rising about delayed flood warnings and federal staffing shortages. Some experts blame a breakdown in communication, not forecasting.
President Trump called it “a 100-year catastrophe” and deflected blame for preparedness issues, while search efforts continue across the region.
