A Michigan family is mourning the loss of 1-year-old Aurora Shepard, who died after being accidentally run over by her grandmother’s riding lawnmower on June 29 in Woodstock Township.
Authorities say the child had joined her grandmother outside without her knowledge while she was mowing. Aurora suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
A GoFundMe campaign describes the incident as an “unimaginable moment” that changed the family’s life forever. Her parents, Sam Shepard and Alyssa Lindeman, are now coping with both emotional and financial hardship.
Experts warn that riding lawnmowers pose serious risks to children, with thousands of injuries and dozens of child fatalities reported annually. Children’s Mercy calls mower-related injuries the leading cause of major limb loss in kids under 10.
Aurora’s death highlights the need for extra caution, as accidents can happen instantly—even in familiar surroundings. The incident remains under investigation but is considered a tragic accident.
