Eighteen-year-old Kieran Matthew avoided jail after violently attacking teacher Carol Shaw at St Paul’s Academy in Dundee, leaving her permanently scarred and unable to work.
On March 22 last year, Matthew grabbed Shaw in a “rugby-style grip” and slammed her head onto concrete, knocking her unconscious and causing a serious head wound. Doctors said the injuries could have been fatal.
Despite the severity, Matthew received a three-year supervision order instead of prison, after pleading guilty to assault causing permanent disfigurement and danger to life. His sentence was reduced under Scottish guidelines due to his guilty plea.
The attack followed a dispute over a PE protocol. Shaw, whom Matthew trusted, was called to help but became the target. Afterward, Matthew showed no remorse, reportedly saying, “She deserved it.”
Shaw suffers from lasting trauma and cannot return to teaching. The judge told Matthew, “You’ve robbed her of her career.”
Defense cited Matthew’s troubled background—abuse, PTSD, ADHD, and an IQ under 60—as mitigating factors. He must now follow a curfew, attend anger management, and remain under supervision for three years.
