John Goodman’s 200-Pound Weight Loss Journey
Over the past 20 years, actor John Goodman—famous for The Big Lebowski and Roseanne—has undergone a dramatic transformation, losing nearly 200 pounds. After getting sober in 2007, Goodman committed to a healthier lifestyle with the help of personal trainer Mackie Shilstone, adopting a Mediterranean diet and working out regularly.
Goodman previously struggled with weight, at one point reaching nearly 400 pounds. “I’d lose 60 pounds every spring after Roseanne, then gain it back,” he told David Letterman in 2011. By 2010, he’d already dropped over 100 pounds. In 2016, he explained, “I just stopped eating all the time. I got tired of looking at myself.”
In 2023, Goodman revealed to Rolling Stone that he’d lost 200 pounds and taken up boxing. However, recent photos from the Smurfs movie premiere sparked concern among fans, who said he looked “gaunt” and “unwell,” though others praised his commitment.
Earlier this year, Goodman, 73, was hospitalized after fracturing his hip during filming. He recovered after surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in London and has since returned to work.
While opinions on his appearance vary, many continue to admire his dedication to health and wellness.
