A 35-year-old Thai woman, Wirawan Emsawat (aka “Sika Golf”), was arrested on July 4 after allegedly seducing and blackmailing high-ranking Buddhist monks and politicians, extorting nearly 385 million baht ($11.9 million USD) over three years.
The investigation began after the disappearance of Monk Arch from Bangkok’s Wat Tri Thotsathep temple. Police traced the case to Wirawan and found over 80,000 pornographic files at her home, including explicit videos involving monks and officials. She allegedly used the footage to extort money and claimed to have had children with some victims.
Authorities believe much of the money funded her online gambling addiction. Monk Arch was reportedly targeted with a false pregnancy claim and pressured for 7.2 million baht ($222,000).
The scandal has shaken Thailand’s Buddhist community. Over a dozen temples are under investigation, with police warning monks to be wary of deceitful laywomen posing as benefactors. The Sangha Supreme Council is now reviewing outdated monastic laws, and new penalties are being proposed—up to seven years in jail and fines for both expelled monks and laypeople involved in sexual misconduct
