My Husband Avoided Traveling with Me for 17 Years — I Came Back from Holiday Early to Learn Why

Lauren always thought her husband, Mike, just disliked traveling, but this year, his behavior left her confused. When a family vacation pushed their tension to a breaking point, she decided to uncover the truth.

While looking at family vacation photos, Lauren’s boys, Ethan and Ben, expressed their wish to visit the beach. They had always been left behind, with Mike refusing to travel. He often cited excuses like cost, the kids being too young, or preferring to stay home.

When her mom invited them to the Virgin Islands, Lauren hoped Mike would join. He agreed to let her take the boys, but when flight details came up, Mike shut down, revealing a deep-seated fear of flying. Rather than argue, Lauren booked the trip on her own.

At the Virgin Islands, everything seemed perfect, but Mike’s distant phone calls left her uneasy. She decided to return early. Upon arriving home, she found Mike with a woman — his therapist, Dr. Keller. Mike admitted he’d been hiding his lifelong fear of flying, which he’d never shared because he didn’t want to appear weak.

Mike had been in therapy to confront his phobia. He felt guilty about missing family vacations and wanted to be a part of them. Lauren understood and promised to support him as he worked through it. The next day, they planned their next vacation together for the first time in years.
