JD Vance: From Troubled Childhood to Vice President

JD Vance, 40, rose to prominence with his 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy, detailing his turbulent upbringing in Middletown, Ohio. Raised by a drug-addicted mother and later adopted by his grandparents, Vance faced early trauma and uncertainty. He credits his grandmother with steering him away from drugs and giving him the discipline to succeed.

After high school, Vance joined the Marine Corps, serving in Iraq as a combat correspondent. His military experience built resilience and sharpened his communication skills, earning him high-profile roles in public affairs despite his low rank.

Using the GI Bill, Vance earned a degree from Ohio State and later a law degree from Yale. His memoir became a bestseller and was adapted into a Netflix film. He then entered venture capital and co-founded Narya Ventures before pivoting to politics.

Though initially critical of Donald Trump, calling him a “moral disaster,” Vance later aligned with him and won a U.S. Senate seat in Ohio in 2022. In 2024, Trump selected Vance as his running mate.

Vance underwent minor sinus surgery shortly before his inauguration but quickly returned to work. Now serving as the youngest vice president since Nixon, he remains a polarizing figure—especially after recent criticism of Ukraine’s president—but his rise from poverty to power remains remarkable.
