The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has banned transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports, updating its Athlete Safety Policy in a document dated last month.
The change, not widely publicized, aligns with Executive Order 14201, signed by former President Donald Trump in February, titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports.” The policy argues that trans participation in women’s categories is unfair and unsafe, denying cisgender women equal opportunities.
USOPC leaders Sarah Hirshland and Gene Sykes confirmed the update, citing their obligation to follow federal guidelines. It’s unclear whether the ban will be enforced before the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
To date, no openly trans athlete has won an Olympic medal in a women’s category.
