9-Year-Old Sophia Subedi Drowns at Hersheypark

Sophia Subedi, 9, tragically drowned at Hersheypark’s wave pool, The Shore, on Thursday, July 24. The Dauphin County Coroner confirmed her death as an accidental freshwater drowning, ruling out any underlying medical condition.

Despite immediate rescue efforts by lifeguards and medical staff, Sophia could not be revived and was later pronounced dead at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Up to 10 certified lifeguards were on duty at the time.

Hershey Entertainment CEO John Lawn expressed condolences, noting, “Our team responded immediately and performed continuous life-saving efforts,” and emphasized guest safety as a top priority.

A GoFundMe page created in Sophia’s memory has raised over $25,500. Described as a joyful and curious child, Sophia had recently moved from Columbus, Ohio, to Harrisburg in 2022, quickly becoming a beloved member of her community.
