Social media often bombards us with images of “perfect” people, making the world feel even more judgmental based on appearance. For those who don’t fit this mold, it can be cruel—something Karine de Souza knows all too well.
Karine, 33, from Brazil, was diagnosed with a rare, incurable condition called Xeroderma Pigmentosum at age 3. It makes her extremely sensitive to UV rays, requiring her to wear SPF 100 sunscreen even indoors. Just a few minutes of sun can cause painful lesions, which have led to over 130 surgeries, including the removal of parts of her face.
Beyond her physical struggles, Karine has faced harsh judgment and abuse both in public and online. But despite everything, she remains positive—and has found love.
She met her husband, Edmilson, through social media. He was inspired by her strength and embraced both her and her three children. However, their relationship faced cruel online criticism, with people doubting its sincerity and making offensive remarks about Karine’s appearance.
In response, a photographer who captured their engagement photos shared a heartfelt post that went viral, praising their love and resilience as an inspiration to many.
Karine encourages others to embrace life and stay positive: “Be happy, smile, because life happens only once.”
In 2023, she and Edmilson welcomed their long-awaited daughter, Zaia, completing their love story with even more joy.
