Tragic Hot Air Balloon Crash Kills 8 in Brazil
At least eight people died and 13 were injured after a hot air balloon crashed in southern Brazil on Saturday, June 21. The balloon caught fire mid-flight over Praia Grande in Santa Catarina, turning a peaceful ride into tragedy.
The balloon, operated by Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, was carrying 21 people when flames erupted in the basket. Survivors say the pilot, one of the injured, urged passengers to jump as the balloon descended. Thirteen people managed to escape before the lighter balloon rose again, only to crash and burn, killing the rest.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but a backup burner may have reignited. Strong winds at takeoff may have also contributed, possibly causing a gas leak.
Among the victims were couples, a mother and daughter, a figure skater, and a doctor. Some were found embracing in their final moments.
Emergency responders arrived quickly but warned of explosion risks from leaking gas. The ride was meant to last 45 minutes, reaching 1,000 meters, with each passenger paying around $100.
Governor Jorginho Mello declared mourning, and President Lula offered federal support. The tour company has suspended operations, and Brazil’s civil aviation agency is investigating.
This is Brazil’s second fatal balloon accident this month, raising safety concerns nationwide.
