Shirley Nunn’s death expose failures in care for families

Posted on August 11, 2025August 11, 2025 By admin

In 2021, Shirley Nunn, 67, and her son Steven, 50, were found dead in their home in Middlesbrough, England. A recent investigation has revealed the heartbreaking story behind the tragedy — one that may have been preventable.

Shirley had been Steven’s full-time caregiver since he suffered brain damage in a childhood accident. He was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and other serious disabilities, relying completely on her care, especially after her husband died from cancer.

In October 2021, Shirley was diagnosed with terminal stage 3 lung cancer, which quickly spread. Despite her illness, she continued caring for Steven while battling depression and fears about his future without her.

Two days after being discharged from the hospital for end-of-life care, both Shirley and Steven were found dead — exactly two years after her husband’s passing. A Domestic Homicide Review later found that authorities missed multiple opportunities to support Shirley’s mental and emotional health.

The report concluded that Shirley always prioritized her son’s needs and likely felt there was no other option for his care, leading to a tragic outcome.
