Trump’s D.C. Crackdown Sparks Backlash and Impeachment Calls
President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping federal crackdown on crime in Washington, D.C., sparking intense backlash and renewed calls for impeachment.
His plan includes a 30-day federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police, deploying 800 National Guard troops, and ordering the homeless to “move out IMMEDIATELY.” Trump claimed D.C. is plagued by “lawlessness” and compared its homicide rate to Bogotá and Mexico City, despite official data showing violent crime is at a 30-year low.
On Truth Social, Trump promised a return to a “beautiful Capital,” and controversially told reporters officers could “do whatever the hell they want” when met with hostility.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser called the move “unsettling and unprecedented,” while critics slammed it as authoritarian and dangerous.
Legal concerns also linger over Trump’s earlier use of the National Guard in Los Angeles without state approval—California officials call it a violation of states’ rights, while the administration insists it was lawful.
