Reazjhana Williams of Denver had planned for a natural birth in June 2021, but when doctors couldn’t find her baby’s heartbeat, she was rushed into an emergency C-section.
Before she could process what was happening, her daughter, Kyanni, was born — but with a deep cut on her face.
Instead of bonding with her baby, Reazjhana had to hand Kyanni over to a plastic surgeon. The newborn required 13 stitches for the facial laceration, which shocked both parents.
“I tried to be understanding, but I don’t understand how this happened during a C-section,” Reazjhana told KDVR.
Doctors later explained that Kyanni’s head had been close to the placenta wall, which may have led to the injury — a known but rare complication in emergency C-sections.
Denver Health responded, saying patient safety is their top priority and they’re in contact with the family.
A GoFundMe campaign has raised over $11,000 to help cover medical costs.
