I’ve always admired Jack Nicholson. I’ll never forget watching The Shining for the first time—or the sleepless nights that followed. His performance showed me just how powerful acting can be.
Now 81, Nicholson has had a legendary Hollywood career, known for intense roles in The Shining, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and more. But behind the fame lies a hidden family secret.
Born in 1937, Jack grew up in New Jersey believing his grandmother was his mother and his sister June was, well, just that—his sister. After moving to L.A. at 17 to pursue acting, tragedy struck: June died in 1963, and his “mother” Ethel passed seven years later.
Then, in 1974, a journalist researching Chinatown uncovered the truth: June was actually Jack’s birth mother. Ethel and her husband had raised him as their own, and June posed as his sister because she was an unwed teen when Jack was born.
Nicholson was shocked, but not traumatized. He said, “I was pretty well psychologically formed,” and felt gratitude toward the women who kept the secret their entire lives.
To this day, the identity of Jack’s father remains unknown.
