Christian Brueckner, the main suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, could be released from prison within weeks, reports suggest.
Brueckner, a convicted sex offender, is serving a seven-year sentence in Germany for a 2005 rape near the Portuguese resort where Madeleine disappeared in 2007. His sentence ends on September 17, but he may be released up to 10 days early.
Despite being named the prime suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance in 2020, no formal charges have been filed. Authorities recently resumed searches in the Algarve, near where Brueckner once lived.
A German source told The Olive Press authorities plan to release him quietly, fearing media attention and vigilante attacks, but still hoping to build a case.
Brueckner denies involvement. His lawyers say they’re unaware of any early release plan.
German prosecutors insist they are “sure” he’s responsible but lack the evidence to charge him. Meanwhile, officials are pushing for strict post-release monitoring, including surveillance and movement restrictions.
