Figure Skating Mourns Two Tragic Losses
The figure skating world is in mourning after the sudden death of 23-year-old Julia Marie Gaiser, a rising star killed in a road accident in Austria.
Originally from Brixen in South Tyrol, Julia was cycling last Thursday when she was struck by a truck at a busy junction. Despite emergency efforts, she died at the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, though the truck driver tested negative for alcohol.
Tributes have poured in for Julia, who represented both Italy and Austria, and was a three-time Salzburg state champion (2023–2025). Her club, EisTeam Salzburg, described her as “a ray of sunshine,” praising her talent, warmth, and role as a mentor to young skaters.
Mayor Andreas Jungmann called her “a role model for many,” while the Italian Ice Sports Federation noted her late start in skating and unwavering dedication.
Just days later, tragedy struck again when 15-year-old Matilda Ferrari was fatally hit by a truck on her way to school in Giustino, Trentino. Emergency crews responded quickly, but could not save her.
Matilda, remembered as a passionate and determined athlete, had recently placed third in the Coppa Italia finals and was part of the Team Ice Secret synchronized skating team. Her club described her as “a role model for all,” especially her younger sister Greta.
These two young talents, taken far too soon, leave behind a grieving skating community and a legacy of inspiration.
