The Prince of Wales has spoken about how he and Catherine discuss difficult family moments—such as her and King Charles’s cancer diagnoses—with their children. Speaking in Brazil, he said they “choose to communicate a lot more,” noting that “hiding stuff… doesn’t work.”
Prince William explained that every family faces unique challenges and that deciding what to share with children is a “balancing act.” He said that offering explanations and perspectives helps their children feel less anxious. Catherine is currently in remission, while King Charles continues treatment.
In the interview, he also said their children do not have phones yet, though Prince George may get a limited-access one when he enters secondary school. He stressed concerns about harmful online content and said he or Catherine handle the school run most days.
William was in Brazil for the fifth Earthshot Prize, which rewards environmental innovations with £1m awards. He said progress has been made but more work is needed in the “decade of change.” This year’s winners included a tropical forest restoration project and a global ocean treaty initiative. Rio officials announced he would be made an honorary citizen of the city.
