President Trump was seen floating the idea of giving nearly all Americans a dividend of nearly $2000, which would be funded by the revenue from his tariff policies.
As per the Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, this idea is currently under discussion, but he did suggest how the payments might be limited to families earning under $100k in a single year.
Now, if that income limit does hold, it might make up to 150 million Americans eligible for it. Most importantly, the massive $2000 payment might not come as a classic cash check.
This dividend would be delivered in different forms, such as tax cuts, credits, and other types of financial relief. Possible mechanisms might entail getting rid of or limiting federal taxes on tips, overtime, and social security, or putting out an offer of a deduction for auto loans.
The plan right now is to remain tentative. Some key details entail the exact income cutoff that qualifies, and how people could receive this dividend is not finalized. Also, it’s not clear if this payment might need new laws or if it could be rolled out under existing tariff authority.
