A Beverly Hills reconstructive surgeon is warning people not to trust the beauty myth that dermal fillers are just a temporary tweak. Though fillers are now extremely common, he says, “You cannot fill your face to youth.” Even subtle enhancements can cause irreversible damage, leading to the dreaded “pillow face.”
Dermal fillers, especially hyaluronic acid (HA), are marketed as safe, reversible ways to smooth wrinkles, plump lips, and contour the face. But Dr. Kami Parsa cautions that they’re not always the quick fix people believe. In July 2024, he shared a viral TikTok showing MRI scans of a patient who received more than 12 syringes of HA over six years. The scans revealed nearly 28 cc of lingering filler—over double the original amount—because HA attracts water and can expand tissue over time.
Parsa stresses that while HA fillers are said to dissolve within six months to two years, small amounts can remain for up to a decade, especially with repeated treatments. This long-term buildup can lead to overfilled syndrome, or “pillow face,” where excessive volume stretches the skin and distorts facial proportions.
He notes this look usually develops from stacking treatments, overcorrecting, or stretching the skin with too much product. Online, users responded with shock, sharing concerns and personal experiences—some even saying the video convinced them to avoid fillers altogether.
