Sir Richard Branson is grieving an unimaginable loss.
On Tuesday, the Virgin founder announced that his wife of 50 years, Lady Joan Branson, has died.
Posting on social media, he wrote:
“Heartbroken to share that Joan, my wife and partner for 50 years, has passed away. She was the most wonderful mum and grandmum, my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world. Love you forever, Joan.”
For decades, Joan Templeman was known as Branson’s steady anchor — a private woman who stayed out of the spotlight while he built a global business empire. Just last week, he shared a tender photo of the two, writing: “Everyone needs a Joan in their life.”
Their love story began in the 1970s in a small West London shop, where Branson said he fell for her instantly. They married in 1989 on Necker Island, a romantic gesture he admitted he could barely afford at the time. Together they had three children: Holly, Sam, and Clare Sarah, who died shortly after birth.
Despite her husband’s fame, Joan preferred a quiet life and rarely gave interviews. Even in recent years, she remained private. This summer, she celebrated her 80th birthday, and Branson shared a loving tribute thanking her for a lifetime of support.
Now, he mourns the woman he has called his foundation — his partner, confidante, and lifelong steady presence. Her passing marks the end of a remarkable 50-year partnership built on love and resilience.
