President Donald Trump announced that National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom, 20, has died after the Washington, D.C., shooting on Wednesday. The second guardsman, Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized.
Beckstrom and Wolfe were shot by alleged gunman Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, an Afghan national. Officials say both soldiers had been sworn in less than 24 hours before the attack.
Trump called Beckstrom a “magnificent young person” who was “savagely attacked.” Her death was later confirmed by the D.C. National Guard.
FBI Director Kash Patel and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth paid tribute, calling her a patriot and hero. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino added that her sacrifice “will never be forgotten.”
Attorney General Bondi said the government will seek the death penalty for the suspect, calling him a “monster.” According to Jeanine Pirro, the shooter used a .357 revolver and ambushed the soldiers before being subdued by nearby guardsmen.
