Am I Wrong for Kicking My MIL Out of My Home after She Came over to Do Me a Favor?

Posted on January 25, 2025 By admin

When my mother-in-law, Melissa, came over to help with my colicky baby while my husband was away, I thought I’d get a much-needed break. But those few hours left me questioning everything, from her intentions to my instincts as a mother.

I was exhausted, barely managing the daily grind of caring for Emily. When Peter called, he suggested Melissa come over to help. Despite our strained relationship, I agreed, hoping for a nap.

Melissa arrived with a casserole and immediately started criticizing me. She took Emily from my arms, telling me to rest. But as I lay down, something felt off. I heard her muttering about how today’s babies were “too coddled.”

I woke up to Emily’s cries and realized Melissa hadn’t even checked on her. I rushed to find my phone missing, the baby monitor unplugged, and discovered Melissa outside, laughing on the phone. I was furious.

She claimed she was just helping, but I couldn’t overlook the fact that she’d left Emily alone for over thirty minutes. We argued, and I asked her to leave. Peter was furious when he came home, defending his mom, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d done the right thing.

The next night, after our argument, I lay awake questioning myself. Had I overreacted? But the image of Melissa laughing while my baby cried stayed with me. My daughter deserved better, and I had to trust my instincts.
