Our health is vital, and heart attacks remain serious—responsible for 1 in 4 deaths in the U.S. While fatal cases have dropped in the last decade, many survivors reported early signs they didn’t recognize.
1. Unusual tiredness
Feeling drained by simple tasks or suddenly out of breath may appear weeks before a heart attack.
2. Chest pain or pressure
A classic symptom. Pain may spread to the left arm, neck, jaw, back, or stomach and often lasts about 15 minutes.
3. Trouble breathing
Blocked arteries limit airflow. Sudden shortness of breath requires medical attention.
4. Weakness or exhaustion
Low blood flow can cause body weakness. Chronic stress may increase risk.
5. Dizziness & cold sweats
Cold sweats or dizziness may signal the heart isn’t pumping enough blood to the brain.
6. Flu-like symptoms
Cough, fever, and fatigue sometimes appear weeks before a heart attack.
7. Hair loss
Blood circulation problems may cause hair loss, especially in men over 50.
8. Irregular pulse
Arrhythmia, fast or uneven pulse lasting over a minute, should be addressed immediately.
9. Swollen feet
Poor pumping function can cause fluid buildup in legs, ankles, and feet.
