In 2005, actor-producer Ann Serrano gave her husband, comedian George Lopez, a lifesaving kidney after doctors discovered his kidneys were failing due to a congenital condition. Despite previously cheating, Serrano gave him another chance—and her kidney—for the sake of their young daughter.
Lopez recovered, but the marriage did not. After 17 years together, the couple divorced in 2011 following further infidelity, with Serrano later remarking that Lopez “didn’t realize you had to stop dating when you get married.” He kept the transplanted kidney.
The divorce strained Lopez’s relationship with their daughter, Mayan, who didn’t speak to him for years. Today, father and daughter work through their real-life issues on the TV series Lopez vs. Lopez, which they describe as healing.
Despite everything, Lopez and Serrano remain close friends and co-parents, united by their daughter and their shared work raising awareness about kidney disease.
