Maria Branyas Morera, born in the U.S. in 1907 and later living in Spain, lived to 117, becoming the world’s oldest verified person before her death in 2024. Before passing, she asked scientists to study her DNA to uncover the secrets behind her extraordinary longevity.
Spanish researchers found that biologically she appeared 10–15 years younger than her age, with very low “bad” cholesterol, high “good” cholesterol, and unique genetic traits that may have protected her from disease and cancer. Scientists concluded that extreme old age and poor health are not necessarily linked.
Her long life was also supported by healthy habits: regular exercise, no smoking or alcohol, an active social life, and a diet that included probiotic yogurt and whole grains. Branyas, who also survived COVID-19 at 113, credited her longevity to calm living, strong family ties, positivity, emotional balance, and avoiding stress and toxic people.
