Ali MacGraw became a Hollywood sensation almost overnight with her breakout role in Love Story (1970), earning major awards and international fame. But just as quickly, her career faded, and she eventually stepped away from the spotlight.
Born in 1939 to artist parents, MacGraw had a difficult childhood marked by financial struggles and a troubled father. She began her career in fashion at Harper’s Bazaar, later modeling before transitioning into acting. After early success, Love Story made her a global star and earned her an Oscar nomination.
Her personal life, however, was turbulent. She married producer Robert Evans, then left him for actor Steve McQueen. Their marriage was controlling and unhappy, ending in divorce in 1978. Around the same time, her career stalled, leading to substance abuse and a stay at the Betty Ford Clinic.
After losing her home to a wildfire in 1993, MacGraw left Los Angeles and settled in a small village near Santa Fe, New Mexico. Now 85, she lives quietly, focusing on community work, animal rights, yoga, and creative pursuits, largely removed from Hollywood.
Her son, Josh Evans, followed her into the film industry as an actor and director. Though Ali left fame behind, she remains fulfilled, saying she is happiest when doing something creative and living life on her own terms.
