Ten-year-old Dakota Levi Stevens died just one month after being placed in a foster home in Michigan, in a case that has shocked the nation. His foster mother, 48-year-old Jennifer Lee Wilson, has been charged with reckless homicide.
According to reports, Dakota had run away earlier in the day and was later found at a neighbor’s home. After returning, he acted out, and Wilson responded by sitting on him, pressing her full body weight—about 340 pounds—on the 90-pound child for roughly five minutes while speaking with his caseworker. Dakota screamed, but she continued, later claiming she thought he was pretending.
When Wilson finally moved, Dakota was unresponsive. A child in the home called 911, but despite being airlifted to the hospital, Dakota died two days later on April 25, 2024. An autopsy ruled his death a mechanical asphyxia caused by severe internal injuries.
Court records revealed Dakota had begged a neighbor to adopt him shortly before the incident, saying his parents had hit him. Wilson later pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and, in January 2025, was sentenced to six years in prison, with one year suspended.
Dakota is remembered as a boy who loved the outdoors and “marched to the beat of his own drum.” His death has renewed calls for stronger protections for children in foster care.
