They Promised My Son $10 a Day—Then Took It Back Right Before Christmas

Posted on January 10, 2026 By admin

Ben, a 12-year-old boy, agrees to shovel snow for a wealthy neighbor, Richard Dickinson, for $10 per job. Ben works diligently for weeks, carefully logging every job and earning over $230. Dickinson promises to pay him all at once before Christmas, but instead refuses, claiming it’s a “business lesson” about never working without a written contract.

Heartbroken, Ben learns a harsh lesson about broken promises. His mother confronts Dickinson, who still refuses to pay. In response, she rallies neighbors and, on Christmas Eve, returns all the snow Ben had shoveled back onto Dickinson’s property, blocking his driveway and cars.

Facing public pressure—and his wife’s anger—Dickinson finally pays Ben the full amount and offers a reluctant apology. Ben uses the money to buy gifts for his family and saves the rest.

In the end, Ben learns that integrity matters more than wealth, that hard work has value, and that having someone stand up for you makes all the difference.
