In 1987, 18-month-old Jessica McClure Morales—later known as “Baby Jessica”—fell 22 feet into a narrow well while playing in her aunt’s backyard in Midland, Texas. Her disappearance sparked a massive rescue effort that captivated the nation.
Trapped for nearly 60 hours without food or water, Jessica’s cries guided rescuers as emergency crews drilled carefully to reach her. Millions watched live as she was finally pulled to safety, making her rescue one of the most famous in U.S. history.
Nearly four decades later, Jessica says the incident shaped much of her life. Though she remembers none of it, she calls the rescue a miracle. Today, she lives in rural Texas with her husband, Danny, and their children and grandchildren.
Jessica required 15 surgeries due to injuries from the fall, including reconstruction of her right foot. A trust fund created after the rescue helped her later buy a home, despite losses in the 2008 market crash. She now works in Midland, Texas, and continues to be recognized as the child whose survival inspired a nation.
