In recent years, the United States has faced a growing threat from the Asian giant hornet, or “killer hornet,” first spotted in 2019. This aggressive, invasive species, known for its large size and powerful sting, has continued to spread. The last sighting occurred in Washington state in 2021, where it wreaked havoc by decimating bee colonies using its powerful mandibles. Killer hornets pose a danger not only to bees but to human safety as well, though fatalities are rare and typically due to allergic reactions.
