Phil Collins’ health has continued to decline, and the music legend now requires 24-hour care. Ahead of his 75th birthday, Collins revealed on BBC’s Eras podcast that he has a live-in nurse to help manage his medications and ongoing medical issues.
The former Genesis drummer has undergone five knee surgeries and now has only one functioning knee, relying on crutches or a cane to walk. He also suffers from drop-foot following a spinal procedure in 2007, which left his foot numb and ended his ability to play drums.
Collins retired from performing in 2022, with his final Genesis show featuring his son Nic on drums. His health struggles were worsened by kidney problems, which he partly attributes to years of heavy drinking. He is now two years sober.
Despite calling recent years “difficult and frustrating,” the Grammy-winning artist says he’s managing — marking a painful chapter in the life of one of music’s most iconic figures.
