Parker Sutherland, an 18-year-old freshman tight end at the University of Northern Iowa, died on February 14 after collapsing during a team workout two days earlier. He was hospitalized but passed away shortly after. An official cause of death has not been released.

Athletic director Megan Franklin called it a “heartbreaking day” for Panther Athletics, while head coach Todd Stepsis said he was “heartbroken” and offered condolences to Sutherland’s family.

A native of Iowa City, Sutherland played in four games during his freshman season and had previously earned all-state honors in high school. He is survived by his parents and sister.
