Dean Franklin, a former The Voice UK contestant, has died at 36, just weeks after being diagnosed with stage 4 oesophageal cancer. The London-born singer-songwriter passed away on Feb. 7, his mother Marie confirmed in a heartfelt Facebook post, saying he “fought so courageously” for over eight weeks and was surrounded by love.
Oesophageal cancer affects the food pipe connecting the mouth to the stomach and can cause swallowing difficulties, weight loss and indigestion, according to Cancer Research UK.
Franklin first shared his diagnosis in December through an emotional Instagram video, revealing he had no symptoms until the cancer spread to his liver. He urged fans to listen to their bodies and seek answers if something feels wrong. His final update came on Jan. 30.
The street performer gained recognition during the 2016 blind auditions of The Voice UK, where he was mentored by Paloma Faith. After announcing his diagnosis, he launched a GoFundMe to support his treatment and family, explaining he wanted to focus on managing his health, easing pain and spending precious time with his daughter.
He stressed the fundraiser was about peace of mind, not giving up, and had planned one final busking performance in London as a heartfelt thank-you to the music community that supported him.
