Sometimes the most talented people carry the deepest pain. That’s true for Kelsey Grammer, the six-time Emmy-winning star best known for playing Dr. Frasier Crane on Cheers and its spin-off Frasier.
Born in 1955 in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Grammer’s life was marked by devastating loss. When he was 13, his father was shot and killed. At 20, while studying at Juilliard, his younger sister Karen was kidnapped, raped, and murdered. Years later, two of his half-brothers also died in a scuba-diving accident.
The tragedies deeply affected him, leading to years of grief and substance abuse. Grammer later admitted he drank heavily to numb the pain but eventually became sober in 1996 and began rebuilding his life.
Despite the trauma, he built a hugely successful acting career after joining Cheers in 1984, later starring in Frasier, a role that earned him multiple Emmy Awards and made him one of television’s most beloved actors.
In his personal life, Grammer eventually found happiness with his wife Kayte Walsh, whom he married in 2011. Together they have four children, and Grammer now has eight children in total.
Today, he often reflects on his painful past while encouraging others to choose forgiveness and resilience. After decades of loss, Kelsey Grammer continues to cherish family, faith, and the chance to keep moving forward.
