Many people believe that once a child recovers from measles, the danger is over. But in rare cases, the virus can return years later with devastating consequences.
A baby boy contracted measles at just 7 months old. Years later, at age 6, he began suffering seizures and cognitive decline. Doctors diagnosed him with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE)—a rare, fatal brain disorder linked to an earlier measles infection.
Despite treatment, his condition worsened, and he passed away at age 7. SSPE can appear years after measles, causing personality changes, seizures, loss of abilities, and eventually severe brain damage.
There is currently no cure, but measles can be prevented through vaccination. 💔
